BPOM — cosmetics

BPOM notification for imported cosmetics

Imported cosmetics are notified to BPOM per product and per variant. No notification number, no legal distribution — and no marketplace listing.

At a glance

Notified per variant, not per brand

The unit of registration is the variant, not the line. A serum sold in three sizes and two formulations is not one notification.

This is where cosmetic budgets go wrong most often, so we map the full SKU list before quoting rather than after.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

How is a "variant" counted?

Broadly, a variant is a distinct product presentation — a different formulation, shade, or in some cases a different pack size. Because the count drives the whole filing plan, we build the SKU list with you at the start and confirm it before anything is filed.

Do imported cosmetics also need halal certification?

Cosmetics fall within Indonesia's mandatory halal regime, with obligation dates phased separately from food and beverage. Plan the two together: the ingredient documentation that halal assessment requires overlaps heavily with what notification already needs.

Can we file before the artwork is final?

The dossier can be prepared, but label review should happen before printing rather than after. Reprinting artwork because a required Indonesian element was missing is slow and entirely avoidable.

Our distributor already notified some of our products. Can we move them?

The notification sits with whoever is named as the holder. Moving it is possible but is a process in its own right, and it is far easier to structure correctly at the start. We will tell you honestly what the transfer involves before you decide.
