BPJPH

Halal certification for imported products

Indonesia operates a mandatory halal regime for defined categories, administered by BPJPH with assessment carried out by an accredited halal inspection body.

At a glance

Mandatory, but phased

The obligation is mandatory, but it does not land on every category at the same time. Obligation dates are phased, and knowing which phase your product sits in decides whether this is urgent or can follow your first shipment.

That single question changes the whole plan, so it is the first thing we check.

Does this apply to you

Mandatory categories are phased in over time

Obligation dates differ by category. Being in a later phase is not an exemption — it is a deadline you can still plan around.

  • Food and beverage products
  • Cosmetics and personal care
  • Ingredients and processing aids used by certified manufacturers
  • Products with animal-derived or ambiguous ingredients
  • Foreign halal certificates seeking recognition in Indonesia

FAQ

Questions we get asked

We hold a halal certificate from another country. Does it count?

Sometimes. Recognition depends on the issuing body and the arrangement in place with Indonesia. We check that first, because where recognition is available it is dramatically faster than a fresh assessment.

Does halal certification apply to cosmetics?

Cosmetics fall within the mandatory regime, with obligation dates phased separately from food and beverage. We confirm your category and its specific deadline during scoping.

What usually delays a halal application?

Two things: ingredients whose origin cannot be traced, and suppliers who cannot produce their own halal certificates. Screening the formulation early avoids most of it, which is why screening comes before filing rather than after a rejection.

Can halal and BPOM registration run in parallel?

Yes, and they usually should. The two dossiers share much of the same source documentation, so gathering it once serves both.

What if one ingredient is the problem?

That is a common and solvable outcome. Options are usually reformulation, switching to a certified supplier for that ingredient, or obtaining the missing supplier documentation. Knowing which of the three applies is exactly what the screening is for.
